Samsung facing $108 million fine for alleged labour violations in Brazil

Rumours of the Galaxy S IV continue to pour in

outh Korean multinational Samsung is now facing a $108 million fine for allegedly violating labour laws at its factory in the Amazon region, according to BBC. Prosecutors in Brazil are seeking damages from the electronics giant for conditions in factories where its mobile phones and TV sets are assembled. Employees there are reportedly forced to work long hours with insufficient breaks.
In response to the allegations, Samsung has said that it will take appropriate action “as soon as it is officially notified.” A company spokesperson, in a statement on Wednesday, said, "We are committed to offering our collaborators around the world a work environment that ensures the highest standards when it comes to safety, health and well-being."  The lawsuit was filed last week but was made public yesterday, according to the original report.

While the news, if found true, is alarming, it should be noted that such labour violations are not a new trend. Last year, reports indicated that overtime violations were found at Samsung’s supplier’s factories. Earlier this year, Samsung’s main rival, Apple, also faced similar charges of labour violations at its factory in China.
